Abstract

Abstract: The Role of Tourism in Poverty Elimination: A Recommendation of Its Implementation In Indonesia. Most people in Indonesia knowing well that tourism is a mayor economic force, but the position of tourism as an important stimulus to international and national economic is not fully recognized. It deserves more attention from the government bodies and organizations concerned with economic development, as well as from Ministry of Culture and Tourism and all combined to the United Nation Millennium Declaration to halve poverty in the world’s poorest countries by 2015. During the twelve year period between 1990 and 2002 international tourists arrivals globally grew by 54 % and now stand around 700 million.By 2020 it expected that this figure will have more than doubled(WTO Highlights 2003 Edition). At the same time, while international and domestic tourist movements continue to grow, there is stronger evidence that tourism, if developed and managed in a sustainable manner, can make a significant contribution to alleviate poverty.UN-WTO is pleased to offer to the international community and specially to those people and institutions who take decisions in the field of tourism.UN-WTO will continue giving high priority to this area of work, among others through research activities, field missions and by promoting its Sustainable Tourism Eliminating Powerty initiative,inviting others public and private sector partners throughout the world to join the Organization in this effort.
